FoR tHe LoVe Of DoGs

Zoe and Tia are everything to me – they are my two favourite pets I have ever had. For those of you that have not read the About Me tab, Zoe and Tia are my Labradors. Zoe is a nine year old black Labrador and Tia is her 6 year old blonde Labrador cross retriever baby!

Zoe & Tia awaiting my tasty treats

I wanted to make this a blog about my two loves which are cooking & animals. So I thought why not combine them together and come up with a recipe that involves dogs, cooking & food!

So, My Mum gathered products from the Supermarket and Pet Supply Stores.

We bought dog choc treats, specially formulated milk powder for animals, whole meal flour & Eukanuba biscuits. We already had fresh eggs and the hot water needed to complete this task.

Delicious High Tea for Puppies

  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups of whole meal flour
  • 1 cup of crushed Eukanuba biscuits
  • 100g crushed Dog Choc Treats
  • 1 cup of Specially formulated Powdered Milk for animals.
  • 3/4 cup of hot water
  • 1/3 cup of margarine
  • pinch of salt

Processing Eukanuba Biccys & Dog Treats

  • In a kitchen food processor crush the Eukanuba biccys with the chocolate treats. If you do not have a processor you can put biscuits in a plastic bag and crush with rolling pin. Set aside for later.
  • You will now need your kitchen mixer to prepare the following, make sure you have a kneading tool for your blender or you can do this in a large bowl with your hands.
  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees fan forced.
  • Pour hot water over the margarine and stir until dissolved
  • stir in the powdered milk, salt and egg
  • add flour 1/2 cup at a time alternating between crushed dog biccys.

The frothy milk powder mix

  • Knead for a few minutes to form a stiff dough.

  • Pat or roll the dough to 1/2 inch (2cm) thickness and cut out shapes of your choice. You can cut dog bones shapes by hand or some specialty shops have dog bone cookie cutters.I used round circles and hand cut some dog bones.
  • On grease proof paper place your shapes and bake for at least 30 minutes checking regularly that they do not burn. These biscuits are made to dry out and be super hard to help with dogs teeth and make them last.

Rolling the dough which was messy & fun

I love all animals and I am very lucky that we have many, we live on a normal size block but big enough to have a few animals. My 4 chooks live under the citrus trees in the back yard beside our pool.

Missy my cat lives on the back bench lazing away in the sun. She sometimes gets a fright when you pat her if she is in a deep sleep, but she is very soft and has long fluffy fur. She sneaks in each night and cuddles up next to my dad.

My hermit crab lives in my bedroom in our old fish tank and at night all I can hear is the scratching and banging on the glass. One has already slipped away to hermit crab heaven but Georgia (this ones name) still is happily alive.

Back to my dogs, the other day my mum and big sister came home to find the post man delving into his pockets and getting out dog treats. Apparently he has been doing this for quite a while and my dogs love him. usually they are good guard dogs and bark at everyone yet all they want to do is get a pat and jump all over you. They are harmless !

The courier driver who delivers things for my dad – hates them. He stands at the gate and throws the deliveries up to the front door which is 10 meters distance, just so he does not have to be near them. He has actually kicked them with his feet, so mum complained to the company and said he was not allowed back on our premises.

So there you have the perfect cookie to make your fury babies and have lots of fun in the kitchen after school….
